House Painter

The job of a house painter may seem like something you want to tackle in your “spare time” but in reality the responsibilities of a house painter loom large. It is true that in its most basic description, house painters apply paint, stain, varnish and other finishes to homes. But in addition to mixing the paints and matching colors, painters must choose the correct paint or finish for the surface being covered. They must take into account the surface’s durability, the method of application and the clients’ wishes. Painters will prepare the surfaces to be covered so the paint will adhere properly. This requires the removal of the old coat by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, washing or abrasive blasting.

Finding someone you trust
If you decide to hire a professional to paint your house, how do you find someone you can trust? Your local Better Business Bureau can tell you if any painting companies in your area have been reported on to them and a local independent paint retailer may keep a list. Family, friends and colleagues are another source for finding a good painting contractor.

Interview your Possibilities
Once you have compiled a list of possibilities, interview the painters. Ask for and check their references. When they give you a quote, get a firm price and both a start and finish date, find out who will actually do the work, check to see if the contractor has liability insurance (and bonding if necessary), and never pay the full amount in advance.

Receive a Written Bid/Contract
A professional painter will provide you with a written bid or contract that should include a list of the work that is to be done, how many coats will be required for each surface, the type of paint to be used for each part of the job, the preparation work that will be done, and who is responsible for furnishing the paint and other materials.
